The Trust's new Headquarters will fulfil a key role in their ongoing improvement plans on and around these courses, consolidating a range of administrative resources together under one roof and strengthening capacity to deliver further enhancements for golfers and visitors to the area.
The new building follows and reinforces the established site perimeter, growing out of a masonry wall along its northern edge that defines the boundary to the Strathtyrum Course. The building sets back along the western edge of the site to present a new public frontage and landscaped entrance sequence, accessed from an existing car park and looking out over the Balgove Course. The office accommodation sits discretely between existing trees and this carefully composed perimeter massing, taking full advantage of the wonderful views across the surrounding golf courses and beyond to the Eden estuary.
The organisation, articulation and material quality of the proposed Headquarters is designed to ground the building confidently yet quietly into the site. It draws influence both from the familiar language of heavy masonry evident in so much of St Andrews, and a lighted touch that alludes to the pavilion forms found in sporting landscapes. A new 'Gatehouse' leading to the nearby Eden Clubhouse further reinforces their narrative while redefining and re-orientating the visitor journey. The interplay of these various influences within the established landscape seek to present a coherent and harmonious whole, simultaneously familiar and new.
