The artist: "The ancient Greeks believed the soul journeyed down the River of Woe to the Underworld, and in my river paintings I often imagine what that journey might look like. Colourful, beautiful on the surface but tragedy and heartbreak lurking not far beneath. In my work, journeys, myths, places, imagined and real, are a common theme, along with loved ones, illness and fragility. I think of it as a positive reminder to celebrate life, embrace the moment, reflect on nature, our interconnectedness and mortality."
