Debbie Lawson’s work is inspired by the intersection between the natural world, the domestic interior and architectural space. She creates sculptural works that merge elements from the material world with those from the surreal and psychological landscapes of the mind.
Sometimes her work is inspired by the hidden life of everyday objects, and other times by what she sees as the aspirational side, or the rebellious side. She is naturally drawn to the animals of the wilderness, quietly finding their way through vast, unfolding terrain like the romantic heroes of literature. Camouflage is an important theme in her more recent work.
Recent exhibitions include Hidden Territories, at Sargent’s Daughters Gallery, New York (solo); Art In Focus: Debbie Lawson at Rockefeller Center, New York, commissioned by Art Production Fund (solo); Carpets of Eden, Gardens of Fantasy at Leila Heller Gallery, Dubai; Seeing With Your Feet: The Carpet in Contemporary Art, at Museum Villa Rot, Germany.
Lawson graduated from the Royal College of Art, Central Saint Martins and UEA. She was born in Dundee, Scotland and lives and works in Kent, England.
