Lorna Freytag

Lorna Freytag is an artist and illustrator from Edinburgh who studied at Gray’s School of Art. Her work has taken her to New York, Sydney, London, and Dubai, and she now lives in Oban, on the north-west coast of Scotland.

She works with pressed flowers to create human forms, exploring the connection between people and nature. Like flowers, her work holds many layers of meaning. At its simplest level, the shape is a reference to herself—her shadow on a sunny day. It also represents how she feels when she’s in nature: in a beautiful garden or a quiet forest—that feeling of peacefulness and contemplation.

At a deeper level, the flowers represent us as people, our memories and emotions—and the passing of time. They’re ever-changing, impermanent, varied, and not all the flowers are perfect. Just like us, the flowers will eventually fade.

NB. Part of the beauty of pressed flowers is that the colours will change and fade over time. Keep out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures and enjoy the journey.
