Norman Mathieson

The artist: I graduated from Glasgow School of Art and the MFA at Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee. Before relocating to Japan, I worked at the Glasgow Print Studio. Around this time, I was involved in a number of overseas residencies including Japan.

For the past two years I have been building up a body of work using various drawing medium including graphite and charcoal on paper, employing a mixture of ideas and motifs in my recent work which has developed into a series of animated drawings. Part of this process involves standalone drawings that form the base for the animations.

I worked on the animation Crow – the space between lines over a period of 6 months. My main purpose was to include movement and events into the drawings I was making, relating to some of the incidents that happen during the time period of drawing. Flying crows, the vibrating sounds of rushing air, Bush Warblers, grass cutters, etc all add to a what I hope is a deeper connection with the events of the landscape. I enjoy observing a space that suddenly springs to life when for example a crow flies by or decides to descend and land. Suddenly the silence is interrupted and you become aware that out of the corner of your eye there is some activity that requires your attention.
