Ali Scott

The artist: My current work reflects on the idea of presence and absence, experienced through loss, aging and fading memory. In this particular piece I hope to create calm and stillness, exploring the sense of being ‘in the moment’, as we can be when memory fades- with both the past and future becoming unsure, we are left with the present moment. These familiar hands, even while peaceful and resting, tell proudly of a long lifetime of busyness and routine. I also see in them the sadness of loss. And the contented weariness of a long life well lived.
The cup of tea is an image I keep returning to- for me it’s become a quiet symbol of time passing and daily routine. I also love the stored history in the simple everyday objects we use routinely; how they trigger memories and connections, are often simultaneously emotive and comforting, and how they will live on beyond us, quietly carrying our history with them.
