I was very pleased when Richard Demarco agreed for me to make a portrait in celebration of his 90th Birthday. I had panned a solo portrait of Richard in an oak forest but the composition you see here became apparent as I made preliminary sketches at Summerhall. I had already made a portrait of Terry Newman as an inspirational woman in her own right, but to me it was obvious that she had to be an intrinsic part of this work too. I hope I’ve captured some essence of this unique working relationship, a hint at the importance of a collection of work by some of the most important contemporary Artists of our time, a collection of documents in relation to this personal journey and the amazing force of creative energy that is Richard Demarco CBE. This work is painted in oil over two joined canvases, fine apart, but better together.
