Learning Through Drawing responds to the RSA’s Beginning(s) theme by foregrounding the origins of architectural thinking and the hidden processes that shape a building long before construction begins. Using a single dwelling designed by cameronwebster architects and completed in 2010, the project brings together drawings made at different stages by Robin Webster, Stuart Cameron and Miranda Webster. Placed along a timeline, the sketches, models and technical drawings reveal the collaborative dialogue, iterative testing and continual refinement that underpin architectural practice.
Assembled initially as a pedagogical tool, this body of work formed the basis of participatory workshops delivered by Missing in Architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture. Students engaged directly with the drawings, exploring how different types of representation communicate ideas to clients, collaborators and builders. The workshops reasserted drawing and model making as crucial instruments of discovery—methods through which ideas are questioned, developed and clarified.
In the context of the RSA’s call to re examine the identity of the Architect Academician, Learning Through Drawing positions drawing itself as the architect’s true beginning: a space where intention, authorship and architectural identity emerge. By revealing process over product, the work encourages renewed dialogue about how architects think, communicate and contribute to cultural practice.
