The artist: "‘Circle on Lockdown Fragment No.72’ forms part of an ongoing series that began during the enforced confinement due to the pandemic, in March 2020. Much of the series has been pieced together from older re-purposed drawings and a variety of different art papers, whose contrasting surfaces and properties have been a key element in the development of the series. I have been exploring the possibilities offered by reworking the paper with a monochrome pallet of ink and a range of mark-making from line drawing, to scoring and tearing.

The works in this series are wall hung, but free from frames. Robustly mounted on aluminium, they that take on a 3D quality, resonating with the space around them and evoking a sense of fragility.

Change through time and the inevitable accumulation of experience are themes that have underpinned the work. The way that buildings and much used objects age, weathering and transforming with the passage of time, is a constant source of inspiration. I work at evoking such a patina in my pictures.

The connotations of ‘the fragment’ are numerous. There is a resonance contained in a fragment of an early renaissance altarpiece or a shard of ancient pottery, of stories to be guessed at, what has been lost..."
