"Joseph" (Gill’s son’s name) is at once intimate and global, personal and political. It challenges viewers to confront the human toll of war, not through dramatic action, but through presence—the weight of gaze, the tension in lines and colour, the haunting emptiness behind the red cross. Walton’s painting does not glorify heroism; instead, it elevates empathy, mourning, and reflection.
