Changing Ideas Award
'Going to work, early morning on the Paris Metro, a refugee wrapped in his fur collared jacket and hat pulled down. Closing his eyes meditatively and breathing calmly. Having a peaceful moment before his day starts, possibly in a hotel kitchen, or as a cleaner in central Paris.
The subject depicts the itinerant nature of the life of a Paris worker, alienated and removed from their heritage, obliged to adopt a different cultural identity, which may bring its comforts and rewards, but puts demands on lifestyles and can be exploitative.
He’s one of the ‘lucky’ ones, able to work in the city, but he must endure long hours, losing his identity in the hierarchy of capitalism.
The feeling is for the beauty, dignity and humanity that persists despite the pressures of surviving in modern societies, with forbearance, resistance and self-belief. ‘
