Astrid Trügg

Still Life with Mimosais painted with gesso and dry pure pigments made from nature's sources. The paint is carefully built up in layers and, in some areas, gently scraped back to reveal the board beneath, using it itself as a color. The mimosa symbolizes the comforting return of spring after winter’s stillness, embodying nature’s ever-returning cycle. The objects are simple yet reveal the quiet beauty of the everyday, the subtle wonders that surround us.

Born in Utrecht in 1972, Astrid Trügg has loved painting since childhood. She moved to Edinburgh in 2003. Initially inspired by the city’s architecture and harbors, she now focuses on still lifes of everyday objects—often inspired by the seaside—with personal or historical significance. Using a unique mix of gesso, glue, and pure pigments like lapis lazuli, she creates vibrant colors and textured surfaces, frequently incorporating antique newspapers. Astrid earned her BA from Utrecht School of Art and completed postgraduate studies at Leith School of Art. She lives and works in North Berwick and exhibits widely across Scotland and the UK.
