This enlarged sweet sculpture quotes the private love letters between Eleanor Roosevelt & Lorena Hickok, reclaiming the nostalgic experience of exchanging Love-Heart Sweets for all. So many Queer women who worked overtly in the public eye had to live subverted. Queer lives historically have been hidden, but by putting queer love at the forefront, we can transform shame into pride - Pride built on connection and love which every queer person deserves. The evolution of our transient oral history into a tactile and interactive work nourishes Hickock and Roosevelt's sense of legacy. To have love solidified and memorialised in physical spaces- where oppressors told them they were unwelcome- The Sweethearts sculpture remakes their loving memories as a joy for the new generations of queers that follow them.
