Leena Nammari RSA (Elect)

Leena Nammari is a Palestinian artist printmaker based in Scotland. She has exhibited within Scotland and Europe, Palestine and Australia as part of group exhibitions and has had a number of solo exhibitions.

She is a master printmaker, in all aspects of printmaking, and though her ideas predominantly are analysed and broken down through printmaking processes, she has also worked in film, photography, bronze and ceramics.

She initially qualified as a nurse, on first arriving in Scotland, worked in various disciplines in hospitals, she found she was drawn into studying art by curiosity and an almost by accident.

She obtained her undergraduate degree in Fine Art Printmakng from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee where she also completed her MFA in Art and Humanities.

Though she worked for the longest time at Edinburgh Printmakers as studio coordinator and master printmaker, she also worked in a variety of organisations with various of groups and individuals, from Stills in Edinburgh to National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh Academy, Women’s Aid, the Cyrenians amongst many, always in pursuit of social engagement in projects, teaching photography and printmaking, with marginalised groups, all the while, maintaining a politically and socially engaged printmaking/making practice.

Her Palestinian heritage and background has always been the backdrop to her making, a kind of story telling as art, a basis to all her work, subtly loaded with the politics of the many, but always reflecting the personal. As all Palestinians, she has had her fair share of personal brushes with the occupation, whether personally having grown up there, through frequent visits home, or through her own family history.

Her images have something amiss in them, a sadness, a tangible nostalgia, an abandonment, a loss, allowing a little pause in the viewer,  allowing the viewer to reflect  a little what they have seen, touching their personal.

She continues to work in her studio, in Patriothall, Stockbridge Edinburgh on various projects, through digital media, printmaking and photography.  Constantly curious, always courteous, consistently welcoming to all who cross her path.
