I decided to take the opportunity which lockdown afforded me to think about my practice and the direction it might take in the future. The early months of lockdown saw me work using repetition. The portrait is an exploration of my relationship with my son Max, who is on the Autistic Spectrum. I tried to depict some of his subtle traits such as the lack of eye contact and the distant gaze but still convey a sense of warmth and vulnerability. The artwork was completed using coloured pencils which I feel is important to mention, as the medium is often under regarded but it’s capable of achieving very high results.
