Steven Cox was born in 1986 in Aberdeen and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 2004 – 08, obtaining a BA (Hons) in painting. He moved to Edinburgh to study at the Edinburgh College of Art (2009-2011), completing his Masters in Contemporary Art Theory and Curating.
Cox is an abstract painter whose practice encompasses a rich vocabulary of abstract painterly techniques and processes. For the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition, Cox is presenting paintings from his recent pattern painting series that involve the appropriation and alteration of domestic wallpaper patterns. To date, works from this series have been exhibited at Marignana Arte in Venice, Italy, and Galerie Jerome Pauchant in Paris, France.
Cox has exhibited extensively in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including at Halsey McKay Gallery, New York; Saatchi Gallery, London; A-M-G5, Glasgow; Galerie Jerome Pauchant, Paris; Marignana Arte, Venice; Annarumma Gallery, Naples; PRACTISE, Chicago; Torch Gallery, Amsterdam, Galleri Benoni, Copenhagen; Palazzo Fruscione, Salerno.
